Sugar Skulls Available at Casa Artelexia

Sugar skulls are an iconic memento mori placed on Day of the Dead altars. They represent both life and death, as they are placed on altars, but also given to the living.   Making them can be quite tedious and very messy.  So why not let Casa Artelexia make them for you?!  We have a variety of decorated (and undecorated) skulls available for purchase.  Call or email us to place an order for your Day of the Dead altar, craft or fiesta!!

Building a Day of the Dead Altar

Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is celebrated on both November 1st and 2nd.  This is time when we celebrate and remember our loved ones that have passed with food, drinks and parties.  It is believed that on November 1st the souls of children return (because they are quicker) and adults return on the 2nd.  During this celebration the graves of the deceased are cleaned and altars are built.  Altars can also be made at home if the graves are too far.  Photos are brought out, stories are shared and the memories are kept alive.
Creating an altar is a fun Day of the Dead tradition that anyone can enjoy. There are many elements that go into creating an altar, including various food and objects specific to Day of the Dead, so we've highlighted a few basic items you'll need to create one and their significance:

Marigolds: Marigold flowers (cempasúchil) are used in altars for their scent, which guides the dead back home (supposedly, the scent of marigold flowers is reminiscent of bone, and that is why these particular flowers are used).
Candles: The purpose of creating an altar is both to celebrate the dead and to invite them back home, so lit candles are used to welcome them back.  One candle is put out for every person that you’ve lost and an extra for anyone that may have been forgotten.
Food: Because the dead will be hungry on their long journey home, it's fitting to add a few pieces of food. You'll see fruit, Pan de Muerto and other snacks on many altars. Pan de Muerto, or "bread of the dead", is traditional sweet bread baked especially for Dia De Los Muertos. You can usually find bone shapes and a "teardrop" (for sorrow) on the top of Pan de Muerto, to represent the dead.
Sugar Skulls: Sugar skulls are an iconic memento mori placed on Day of the Dead altars. They represent both life and death, as they are placed on altars, but also given to the living.
Water: Placing water on an altar helps quench the thirst of the dead, after their long journey home.
Papel Picado: Papel picado banners are festively strung across the altars representing wind and the fragility of life.
Photos and Mementos: Photos of the deceased are placed on the altars along with some of their personal and/or favorite items. If honoring your grandfather who loved his tequila, feel free to set out a glass of his favorite tequila for him to enjoy when he returns!  This is where you can get creative in how you remember your loved ones when building your altar. Put out as much or as little as you want.
Although Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday, I feel that all can appreciate its message and take joy in the holiday, tradition and celebration.

Day of the Dead DIY #21: Embroidered Felt Sugar Skull

For DOD DIY #21, we'll be creating small felt sugar skulls, also a workshop we offer here at Casa Artelexia!

What you'll need:
-one of our felt sugar skull DIY kits (buy it here or come into Casa Artelexia every Saturday from 12-4 for our workshop!)
-needle
-embroidery thread
-glue

What to do:

1. Cut a long piece of embroidery floss (over a foot long) and knot the end. You'll begin by taking one side of your felt skull and attaching the eyes, nose, flowers, and mouth first. Do this before you attach the two sides together.
2. Begin sewing by bring your needle up the back of the skull's face, and then back down through whichever piece you are attaching first. Bring your needle up and down until the piece is anchored onto the face, and then move on to the next piece.
3. For the mouth, you will also come up with your needle through the back of the face and create a few horizontal stitches. Create a few vertical stitches to complete the mouth.

4. Now you can begin attaching both sides together. For this part, cut a new, very long piece of embroidery thread (this will allow you to stitch around the entire skull without running out of thread).
5. You'll use the blanket stitch to embroider the pieces together: Come up through the back of the two pieces with your needle.
6. Come back down next to the place where you came up, and before you pull all the way through, take your needle and thread through the stitch.
7. Come back down next to the stitch you just created, and repeat.
8. Stuff your skull with fluff before you sew it completely and glue the sequins onto the eyes.

Day of the Dead DIY #10: DOD Diamond Pinatas

Wow, we're already at 10 DoD DIYs–only 50 more to go!

Our 10th DoD DIY is a "chic" alternative to Day of the Dead party decorating. We've taken 3d paper diamonds and created unique mini pinatas!

What you'll need:

-the pattern we've provided for creating the diamonds
-cardstock
-glue
-crepe paper
-plastic knife
-ruler
-tape
-string
-scissors

What to do:
1.Begin by cutting out the 2d diamond shape (like the one shown above) and scoring (using the back of the plastic knife and a ruler) the lines where you will bend the shapes to create it.
2. Fold the sides to create the diamond shape and add your piece of string to the inside of the diamond before closing it completely.
3. Cute your fringe, but first cut your pieces of crepe paper in half length wise (to fit the scale of the small diamond).
4. Glue your pieces of fringe on, starting from the bottom of the diamond and working your way up.
5. We put a small white crepe paper skull on one side of our diamond and rolled up small pieces of fringe to create tiny flowers, but you can do any Day of the Dead themed design you would like.
6. Use your mini pinata as part of a goodie bag, gift, place setting, or just hang it up!

Day of the Dead DIY #9: Sugar Skull Planters

Our 9th DoD DIY is all about upcycling those old ceramic planter pots you have lying in your house and turning them into Day of the Dead worthy decor! Plus your plants will look very nice.
What you'll need:
-a ceramic planter pot
-bright and colorful acrylic paints
-paintbrushes
-your favorite plant
-a pencil

What to do:
1. Draw your skull's face onto your ceramic pot with a pencil first.
2. Pick out colors you would like to use and begin painting your sugar skull. You can also paint over your dried planter with mod podge to give it a glossy look.
3. Plant your favorite plant inside the pot!

Join us this Saturday at Casa Artelexia, from 12-4pm, for a medley of art workshops including Paint Your Own Sugar Skull Planter!

Day of the Dead DIY #6: Sugar Skulls Part II

Part two of sugar skull making is the best part: decorating your sugar skull after making colorful frosting!

What you'll need:
-meringue powder
-powdered sugar
-water
-concentrated paste food coloring
-pastry bags

What to do:
1. Mix 2/3 cups water, 1/2 cup meringue powder, and 2 pounds powdered sugar with an electric mixer until icing peaks (takes 9 minutes or so). Keep in a tightly covered container and do not refrigerate.
2. Scoop some icing into a cup and begin mixing with your food coloring.
3. Scoop your colorful icing into a pastry bag (it helps to cut the tip slightly so you can squeeze the icing into the tip while letting air out).
4. Begin "drawing" on your sugar skull with your pastry bag.
5. Use your icing as "glue" for other cool decorations like sequins, feathers, and foil!
5. Let your decorated skulls dry until the icing is hard.  Now your skulls are ready to share!
Here are some images from our sugar skull workshop on Saturday - we'll be hosting sugar skull workshops every Saturday from 12-2pm until Dia de los Muertos!
