Poinsettias: Legend Has It...

Since the mid-1800s, poinsettias have been known as symbols of the Christmas season here. But this lovely red flower is actually indigenous to Mexico where legend has it, a poor girl picked weeds in lieu of flowers, at an angel's suggestion, to place on a church altar. The weeds sprouted into the beautiful poinsettias that have been used as a symbol of Christmas in Mexico since the 16th century, here in the U.S., and other countries.
