Tomorrow we are heading out on our 3 week long trip to search for new product for the new store! I am sooo excited to be going with my dad on this once-in-a-lifetime trip. My bag is packed, my camera is charged and I am ready for an adventure. Let's get one thing straight - this is not a luxury vacation. We are going to be staying in hostels, spending the nights on buses, eating at the markets and living out of a backpack (you heard me, 1 backpack). So, as much as I would love to look like this girl in the picture above, I probably won't. :) But that's okay. San Diego Museum of Art: Vochol

Going on now at the San Diego Museum of Art - This 1990 Beetle was covered in 2,277,000 beads applied by eight artisans from two Huichol families, who finished their work in late 2010. While you are there make sure to check out the Mexican Modern Paintings from the Andres Blaistein Collection.

What is Huichol? Descendents of the Aztec, the Huichol or Wixáritari are an indigenous ethnic group of western central Mexico, living in the Sierra Madre Occidental range in the Mexican states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Durango. They are best known to the larger world as the Huichol; however, they refer to themselves as Wixáritari ("the people") in their native Huichol language. For the Huichol, yarn painting is not only an aesthetic or commercial art form. The symbols in these paintings are sprung out of Huichol culture and its shamanistic traditions. The yarn paintings were originally used as offerings at their religious sites. From the small beaded eggs and jaguar heads to the modern detailed yarn paintings in psychedelic colors, each is related to a part of Huichol tradition and belief. The beaded art is a relatively new innovation and is constructed using glass, plastic or metal beads pressed onto a wooden form covered in beeswax. Common bead art forms include masks, bowls and figurines. Like all Huichol art, the bead work depicts the prominent patterns and symbols featured in the Huichol religion. Peyote is a focal point for their ceremonies, and their colorful beadwork and yarn work reflects a reverent and symbiotic relationship with nature.

AMOR: Pretty Painted Walls

There is so much to do to get ready for the new store (eek!). We leave next week on our buying trip leaving us little time to make some big decisions. Picking colors is one of them. One thing we absolutely love at Casa Artelexia is color. Lots and lots of color. We've painted every single room and ceiling a different color. The outside of the store is even painted a bright orange (and I mean BRIGHT) with a royal blue trim (think Frida Kahlo's house). It took us forever to choose the colors our first time around - we practically lived in the paint department at Home Depot and changed our minds about a trillion times. It is so hard to decide on a color palette when there are so many possibilities. With the new space we have a TON of wall space and we will be doing the painting ourselves. Yup, you heard right. I'm counting on YouTube to teach me how to faux paint. Crazy? Absolutely. Once we settle on the colors then everything else is a piece of cake. Have you ever faux-painted? Any tips? Destination: Mexico

This girl is going shopping. When? A week from today. Where to? Puebla, Oaxaca, San Miguel de Allende, Chiapas, and Mexico City for a total of 19 days. Am I excited? Hell yeah! Usually my dad goes alone on the shopping trips but this time I will be learning the ropes. We only have 2 months to open our new store and we need product. Lots of product. We will be searching high and low for furniture, mirrors, paintings, textiles, jewelry, tabletop, ceramic - you name it. I'll be hand-selecting the product, meeting the artists, visiting their studios and homes, riding in buses for 10 hours at time, taking as many pictures as my camera will allow, eating and drinking until my heart's content, visiting markets and having one amazing adventure with my dad. I've only been to San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City but the other places will be all new to me. Have you been to any of these places? Do you have any recommendations? I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE any and all suggestions!!

We have been busy bees over here prepping for our NEW LOCATION! Yes, lots of changes this coming year. Casa Artelexia is proud to announce that we will be moving across the street to a much larger location. In addition to what we have now, we will also carry furniture (both funky and traditional rustic), lighting, tons of textiles, books, offer custom design services, a gallery space, and lots more!! Happy (late) New Year! Hope that you have had a good first 2 weeks. I must say that so far this year has been really wonderful! Lots of exciting changes coming our way, the weather has been fantastic here in San Diego and my New Year's resolutions are going strong. How about you? Have you been sticking to your New Year's resolutions? One of my favorite activities to do in January is make a vision board to help keep me on track throughout the year. I've made one for the past three years and it has proven to be quite helpful. I'll share mine with you in a few days. What do you do to stay on track and motivated throughout the year?

The Story of the Virgin of Guadalupe

On December 12^th, 1531, the image of The Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, is said to have appeared on the robe of Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin. Juan Diego was an Aztec convert to Roman Catholicism, bridging two worlds, that of the Aztec who saw her and that of the Spanish conquerors who now ruled his land. She has since become the patron and symbol of Mexico, a country born of this fusion of cultures.

According to the traditional account, Juan Diego was walking between his village and Mexico City on December 9^th, 1531, when Our Lady of Guadalupe first appeared, speaking to him in his native Náhuatl language. She told him she wanted a church built on Tepeyac Hill and told him to communicate her wish to the authorities. Juan Diego told Mexico's first Bishop, Juan de Zumárraga, but the Bishop didn't believe him. The Virgin appeared to Juan Diego again, asking him to go see the Bishop on Sunday. When Juan Diego went to go see the Bishop again, Zumárraga asked for proof. The Virgin appeared to Juan Diego a third time and told him to return the next day. His uncle, with whom he lived, became very ill, and Juan Diego went to find a priest to give him the last rites. The Virgin appeared for the fourth and last time on December 12th, 1531. She told Juan Diego not to worry, that his uncle was well, that she was his mother and he need fear nothing. She asked him to go gather some roses, which had never grown there, and especially in mid-winter. Miraculously, roses started to bloom at his feet. He wrapped them in his robe, and the Virgin told him not to open it until he was before the Bishop. When Juan Diego opened his robe in front of Bishop Zumárraga, the roses cascaded out and they discovered the image of the Virgin imprinted upon it.

The original cloth with the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe is on display in Mexico City at Our Lady of Guadalupe Basilica. Pilgrims from all over Mexico and abroad converge on Tepeyac Hill and the Basilica, seeking healing and favors, keeping vows, or simply paying homage to their beloved Little Mother, Queen of Mexico. The Virgin of Guadalupe is celebrated every year on December 12^th.

Advent Calendar: Day 11

Celebrated my best friend's birthday at our favorite restaurant with some brunch and eggnog ice cream. YUM! Even though I am not a fan of eggnog I loved this ice cream. Make your very own with this recipe from Epicurious. Enjoy!!

Ingredients

1 cup whole milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
7 large egg yolks
3/4 cup sugar
2 cups chilled heavy cream
3 tablespoons dark rum
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

Special equipment: an instant-read thermometer; an ice cream maker. Garnish: freshly grated nutmeg

Bring milk and salt to a boil in a 2- to 3-quart heavy saucepan over moderate heat. Remove from heat.

Whisk together yolks and sugar in a bowl, then gradually add 1/4 cup hot milk, whisking. Add yolk mixture to milk remaining in pan in a slow stream, whisking, and cook over low heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until mixture is slightly thickened, coats back of spoon, and registers 175°F on thermometer, 3 to 5 minutes. Immediately pour through a fine-mesh sieve set into a clean bowl and stir in cream, rum, vanilla, and nutmeg. Chill custard, covered, until cold, at least 2 hours.

Freeze in ice cream maker, then transfer to an airtight container and put in freezer to harden, at least 2 hours. Soften slightly in refrigerator before serving, about 20 minutes.

There's nothing like the old-school Christmas movies. Last night we watched Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer as we decorated the tree and drank hot cocoa. It was a perfect winter evening. :) My all-time favorite Christmas movie, Elf. I LOVE ELF. My sister and I have seen it at least a million-and-one times and we never get tired of it. Are you a fan of eggnog? I'll admit it's not my favorite. But, what I do enjoy, is Rompope. It's the Mexican version of eggnog. What makes it different? Rum. Lots of rum. Now that's a holiday drink! Also try pouring it over ice cream or in coffee for a Mexican version of Irish Coffee.

One of my New Year's resolutions this coming year, is to always have manicured nails. I'm inspired by my little sister - she always has her nails done. Seriously. Her nails are always polished perfectly and she's only 16! She's been doing her own nails for the past 3 years and never seems to get lazy about doing them. I'd have to say that she does them at least once a week. Now that's dedication!! There is something about manicured nails - I always feel more put together, even if it's a clear coat. Don't you? Here are my nails this week. I used this and this OPI nail polish from Sephora. What do you think? Do you like having your nails done?

Sparkle Time!

There's nothing better than a warm homemade pie fresh out of the oven on a chilly night with the family. Wishing you a delicious and cozy weekend! My favorite kind of pie is boysenberry. What's yours?

Mixed Berry Pie by Tartelette

Makes one 9-inch pie

Ingredients:
For the crust (pate brisee)
2/3 cup millet flour
1/3 cup superfine white rice flour
1/4 cup sorghum flour
(or you can use 1&1/4 cup all purpose flour instead of the 3 flours mentioned above)
2 tablespoons powdered sugar
8 tablespoons butter, very cold and cut in 1/2 inch dice
2 tablespoons to 1/4 cup ice water
1 egg mixed with 1 tablespoon water (to brush on the top crust)

Directions:
In a large bowl, mix together the millet, rice and sorghum flour. Add the powdered sugar and mix. Add the cold butter and mix with a pastry cutter or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the water, one tablespoon at a time and mix until the dough comes together in a ball. Flatten into a disk in between your hands and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate 30 minutes (you can make it the day before too)

For the filling:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup blueberries
1 cup strawberries (cut in half or quarters - depending on size)
1/2 cup blackberries
1 cup raspberries
zest and juice of one lemon
1 tablespoon fresh chopped lemon verbena (optional)
1/4 cup honey
2 tablespoons cornstarch or arrowroot

Directions: Place all these ingredients into one large bowl and mix together well. Let set for 20 to 30 minutes.

When ready to bake the pie, preheat the oven to 350F and position a rack in the middle.
Divide the pie into two balls, one slightly larger than the other. Roll the larger ball to 1/8-inch thickness on a floured work surface. Place in your pie plate and trim the excess all around the pan. Add the fruit mixture and spread out evenly on the bottom and pressing them down slighly. Roll the second ball of dough to also 1/8-inch thick and cut 1/4-inch strips from it. Layer them on top of the pie. Brush with the egg wash and bake for 30-40 minutes.

Delicious Goodness: Whimsy & Spice

December is all about the sweet treats. Whether you are eating them or giving them, they are everywhere. With my busy schedule I rarely get time to bake so I typically end up purchasing my sweet treats. I am so happy to have found the perfect go-to treat. While shopping at the flea a few weeks ago I discovered Whimsy & Spice. They are the cutest family-run confectionery based out of Brooklyn. And, they are AMAZING. I recently sent a "Yay, It's Christmas"package home to the familia filled with their handmade goodies and they absolutely loved them! They are so convenient (they ship!) and affordable making them the perfect holiday gift!

I also used their pumpkin ginger sandwich cookies in my Thanksgiving table for the pace cards and everyone ate them right up. Aren't they super cute?!

Yay, December is here!! Let the countdown to Christmas begin. One of my favorite things that I look forward to during this time of year are Advent Calendars. They always remind me of my childhood, especially my grandmother. She would give me one every year and it was what I looked forward to the most. Are you familiar with them? They are calendars that have little openings, like doors or windows, that you open each day as you count down to Christmas. Some calendars have images, chocolates or small toys in each window making opening them something to look forward to. I would always get the chocolate kind. It's been years since I've had one of these and I really do miss having one. Holiday Cards

It's the last day of November and time to start prepping for December! There are special presents to prepare, advent calendars to make, cards to write, food to make and carols to sing. Oh, I love me some Christmas carols... First things first, Christmas cards. Today I'm flying from New York to San Diego and will have plenty of time on the plane to start writing them out. All 120 of them! That's right. 120. Actually, I really do enjoy writing out my Christmas cards. It's a great way to spread some holiday cheer and say hello to friends and family that you don't speak as often as you would like! Included in the cards will be some sequins and homemade confetti - who doesn't love a little extra sparkle?! (More on the DIY confetti later this week.) Hi there! I hope that you enjoyed your Thanksgiving. We did. We ate way too much food, drank lots of wine, played board games and laughed like crazy. While my mother-in-law did all of the cooking, I was in charge of desserts and setting the table. Setting the table is ALWAYS my favorite part of any get-together. I absolutely love going the extra mile when it comes to the table and decorations. For this table I used butcher paper, glitter hand-made confetti, green squash, mason jars, fresh flowers, ribbon and alphabet flags. Do you like to decorate your table? What did you use? I'd love to hear!

Hello there! We are just a few days away from Thanksgiving and I can't wait! This year is a little different for me. My husband and I will be spending the holidays in Brooklyn, with his family. Typically, when I'm in San Diego, I do most of the cooking along with my mother and sister. "Ova here" it's a different story. Mama G, my mother in-law, does most of the cooking and I know better than to cross an Italian woman in her kitchen. My duties will consist of decorating the table and making a few desserts. Baking is NOT my strong suit. Cooking, no problem. Baking, not so much. But I can do this. I'm thinking of a pumpkin cheesecake and these adorable pumpkin cupcakes. Do you have any fail-safe dessert recipes? I'd love to hear!

Hi there! Are you having a nice week so far? I have been a busy bee over here at the store unpacking all of our new product. So much fun stuff!! Lots of great new party supplies that would be perfect for a Cinco de Mayo bash, birthday party or wedding! Speaking of weddings, I have some amazing wedding pictures from my friends Tori and Austin to share with you. Last year these super sweet and extremely talented people were married in Sayulita, Mexico. A quiet fishing village just 25 miles north of Puerto Vallarta seems like an ideal place for a romantic and memorable wedding. Sigh...these two love-birds are too cute!! Enjoy!

Hi! Sorry that I have been MIA. We received a ton of shipments this week and I have been busy unpacking and pricing. Finally, our oilcloth is here, and by tomorrow I should have our Alexander Henry Fabrics in. And did I mention pillows? Yes, lots of new and super funky pillows to spice up any room! 8 Things to See and Do in Cozumel

If your friends have been to Cozumel, the chances are high that it's been while they were on a cruise. The island of Cozumel is a popular cruise stop off the eastern shore of Mexico, close to the Yucatan channel. Famous for its underwater caves, Cozumel has often been proclaimed of the best diving spots in the world. If you're headed there, definitely don't forget to pack your snorkeling gear, but know that there's more to Cozumel than swimming with the fishes! Cozumel, which is a Mayan word for "Island of the Swallows," has many Mayan ruins to explore, spas to visit, and food to enjoy. I've picked out a few things that you should look into for your next visit to Mexico's third largest island! I have never been but would love to go! Have you ever been to Cozumel? 1. Mayan Ruins - On and from Cozumel, you will have the opportunity to see several Mayan Ruins such as Tulum, Xel-Ha, Coba and Chichen Itza. There are flight bus, and ferry excursions to Chichen Itza, which is perhaps the most magnificent. There a huge temple and many other significant Mayan structure await. Coba is equally interesting, as it still being uncovered. Many archeologists believe Coba may eventually be the largest site yet on the Yucatan Peninsula.

2. Vive Chankanaab Park - A national park and Cozumel's largest monument to nature, Vive Chankanaab offers adventure and tranquility in one location. Built around a small lagoon, Chankanaab is actually a Mayan word that means "small ocean." Now a conservation area, there are plenty of species of both animals and plants that are preserved here. It is also a great snorkel destination, as many sculptures and other treasures exist hidden in the lagoon, possibly by pirates who used this as a space to protect their wares.

3. Atlantis Submarine Expedition - Want to explore the underwater scenery but not interested in diving? Try taking the Atlantis Submarine Expedition to Chankanaab's lagoon, which includes a small cruise along the western shore of Cozumel on the way there and back. On the submarine, you will go over 100 feet underwater and have the chance to view some of the 30-foot coral reefs and many marine animals. Be warned however: this can become a day-long excursion with delays and you will miss out on some of the colors of the ocean available only to divers who are willing to see it with their own eyes and not through a glass window.

4. Swim with the Dolphins - Also taking place in Chankanaab is the opportunity to swim with the dolphins through various excursion programs. Learn how to train dolphins, see their behaviors up close and swim around with them in the warm waters.

5. Mexican Steam Bath or Temazcal - Experience an ancient Mayan traditional with the Mexican Steam Bath or Temazcal. A "relaxing and cleansing" therapy treatment for your body, these steam baths take place in little brick structures and are led by a shaman. Afterwards, cool off by jumping into one of the famed Yucatan cenotes, or sink holes, or take a freshwater shower outdoors.

Casa Mission - Though they claim to be the best Mexican and seafood restaurant in Cozumel, many reviewers believe that the real gem of this restaurant is not necessarily the food as much as it is the location. Enjoy your dinner surrounded by fountains and gardens in this stylish Mexican ranch.

7. Wet Wendy's - If you want to let loose after a long day of swimming and snorkeling, Wet Wendy's is apparently the place to do it. With their own house brand of tequila and margaritas "the size of Mt. Everest," Wendy's features an entirely American staff and dancing. Not the best place to dive into Cozumel culture, but for those American tourists who are homesick, Wet Wendy's may be your best bet.

Loving these pancake pics! Wouldn't these sprinkle pancakes be perfect for an Easter morning brunch? Or instead of bright colors, use pastels for the rainbow pancakes? The choices are deliciously endless. For some reason I am CRAVING me some pancakes! Maybe because it's the weekend and it's going to be a chilly one here in S.D. I know, we are such complainers if it hits below 65 degrees. Can you blame us? Lately I have been making orange-bacon pancakes. They aren't literally orange, I just use a ton of orange zest and orange juice, and then I top them off with bacon bits. So yummy and packed with vitamin C! How about you? Best Mexican Inspired Wedding Ever!

This has to be the CUTEST Mexican inspired wedding EVER! Seriously. These wedding photos make me want to get married again. Luck for me that won't be happening. I am going to have to find some grand occasion to celebrate so that we can use this theme. I refuse to let it go unused...maybe a baby shower? ;) No baby just yet for me but with the pastels, succulents and pan dulce, this could be turned into the sweetest celebration for a little baby. I'm just saying....

I don't know if you know this but I am a sucker for succulents. They are my absolute most favorite thing in the world. They make me so so happy. I find them fascinating and oh-so-beautiful. Do you see how they used them in the glass cylinders with the pinto beans? How cute, and perfectly Mexican, is that?! The different shades of green from the succulents go so well with the pinks and oranges of the roses.

These little papel picado decorations on the cake are genius! I don't think that I've ever seen it used but I love it. So simple and perfect. The touches of succulents mixed in with these sweet roses everywhere make my knees go weak. They really do!

This bouquet is gorgeous! And, adding the Jarritos is always a fun and colorful touch to any event. Jarritos is a popular brand of soft drink in Mexico. They come in fruit flavors and are more carbonated than popular soft drinks made in the U.S. "Jarritos" means “jugs," in Spanish and refers to the Mexican tradition of drinking and other drinks in clay pottery jugs.

What a smart and budget-friendly idea to use the Terra-Cotta saucer (find them at Home Depot) as a platter for the pan dulce and cupcakes. I am so stealing this idea for my next fiesta! What's your favorite element from this Mexican inspired wedding?

Mexico's National Flower: Dahlias

One of the best parts about spring? The scent of flowers in the air! Lately my neighborhood has been sweet and fragrant with blossoming flowers: daffodils and lilies, African daisies and orchids. However, one of my favorite flowers is less abundant here in San Diego. The dahlia, Mexico's national flower and native to Mexico and Guatemala, has dipped in and out of popularity stateside over the last decade. Of course, you can find some at Balboa Park, but for them to grow wild like other flower species here, it would require some helping hands.

Luckily, when I am in the mood for some dahlias, I head over to the Little Italy Mercato. I have a great supplier there, Hidalgo Flowers. They have a great selection and always at an affordable price. Let me warn you, the flower guy may want a hug and kiss in return for your super deal, but it's totally worth it! I'm thinking of using them for the bridal shower I'm planning in July. With so many colors and styles to choose from, these flowers are perfect for any occasion. Now, I just need to narrow down the colors that I want to use and how I plan to display them. So many decisions! But honestly, no matter how you display these flowers, they always look gorgeous. Which color do you like best? I typically go for a lot of color but I am LOVING the light peach/ivory dahlia pictured below. It's so romantic and sweet.

Dahlias are not the easiest of flowers to grow. They need to be staked so that the tall, enormous flowers don't fail. And even shorter versions that don't require staking need beds with great drainage. But for those willing to do the work, the results are beautiful, colorful flowers whose blooms can sometimes reach a foot in diameter - the size of a dinner plate!

Though these flowers are native to Mexico, the European explorers who first documented them sent seeds home and made them incredibly popular in Europe. In more contemporary years, dahlias became very popular at flower shows and often take home large prizes, giving gardeners an incentive to start experimenting with dahlia hybrids. As a result, there are at least a dozen different styles of dahlia to choose from.

If you decide to start growing some of Mexico's finest flower, be sure to read up on them! Dahlias are very fussy and subject to a lot of attacks from elements like mildew and pests such as snails. Pick up some tips and tricks from a few guides and bring some of Mexico to your garden!

It's a Ceviche and Micheladas kind of day!

It's only the end of March but it feels a lot more like summer here in good ol' San Diego! Today is the perfect day to invite some friends over and enjoy the evening eating and drinking al fresco. I picked out a great ceviche recipe by Rick Bayless and paired it with a Michelada. What's a Michelada? It's beer with a Mexican twist! Micheladas are made up of Mexican beer prepared with tomato juice, (I prefer Clamato), lime juice, assorted sauces and spices. It is served on ice, in a chilled, salt-rimmed glass.

Ingredients

1 lime
Tajin or coarse salt
2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
1 dash Tabasco sauce
1 dash soy sauce
1 pinch black pepper
2-3 dashes Salsa Maggi
12 oz. beer, preferably a dark Mexican beer like Negra Modelo (Although I prefer it with a light beer, like Tecate, thanks to Chef Andrew Spurgin's version of the Michelada)

1. Squeeze the juice from the lime and set aside. Salt the rim of a highball glass by rubbing it with the lime and dipping it in Tajin. You can use coarse salt if you don't have Tajin. Fill the glass with ice.
2. Add lime juice, Worcestershire, soy sauce, Tabasco, pepper and Salsa Maggi.
3. Pour in beer, stir and serve, adding more beer as you sip.

Frontera Grill's Now-Classic Ceviche

Ingredients

1 pound “sashimi-quality” skinless meaty ocean fish fillet (halibut, snapper and bass are great choices), cut into 1/2-inch cubes
About 1 1/2 cups fresh lime juice
1 small white onion, chopped into 1/4-inch pieces
Hot green chiles to taste (roughly 2 or 3 serranos or 1 large jalapeno), stemmed and roughly chopped
1/4 cup pitted green olives, preferably manzanillos
1 large (about 10-ounce) ripe round tomato, cored, seeded (if you wish) and cut into 1/4-inch pieces
OR 1/4 cup (lightly packed, about 1 ounce) soft sundried tomatoes, chopped into 1/8-inch pieces
1/4 small jícama, peeled and chopped into 1/4-inch pieces
(optional, but suggested if using sundried tomatoes)
1/4 cup (loosely packed) chopped fresh cilantro (thick bottom stems cut off)
2 tablespoons olive oil, preferably extra-virgin
Salt
1 teaspoon sugar
About 16 ounces of sturdy tortilla chips or 3- to 4-inch tostadas (preferably chips or tostadas from a local tortillería), for serving

Directions

1. “Cook” the fish in the lime juice. In a large non-reactive bowl (stainless steel or glass are best), combine the fish, lime juice and onion. The fish cubes should float freely in the juice; if they don’t, add a little more juice. Cover and refrigerate until the fish is as “done” as you like: 30 minutes to an hour for medium-rare, 3 to 4 hours for “cooked” all the way through. If you’re planning to serve your ceviche on chips or tostadas, tip off all the lime juice; to serve in dishes or glasses, tip off about half the juice. (Sad to say that the juice is fishy tasting at this point and can’t easily be used for another preparation or another round of ceviche. In Peru, however, they season it, pour it into shot glasses and serve it as sangre de tigre—tiger’s blood.)
2. Flavor the ceviche. In a mini food processor, process the green chile and olives until finely chopped (or finely chopped by hand). Add to the fish along with the tomato, optional jícama, cilantro and olive oil. Stir well, then season with salt (usually about a scant teaspoon) and sugar. Refrigerate until ready to serve—preferably no longer than an hour or two. Serve the “dry” version with the chips or tostadas for your guests to use a little edible plates; serve the “wet” version in small dishes or glasses.

Working Ahead: The fish can be marinated in lime and completely drained (even if you’re going to add back some of the juice) early in the day you’re going to serve; cover tightly and refrigerate. All the vegetables and the cilantro can be prepped, mixed, covered and refrigerated early in the day, too. Mix and season the ceviche within two hours of serving; keep it refrigerated until the last moment.

We searched high and low to see what would be the most interesting fabrics to carry here at Casa Artelexia. We wanted the fabric to be colorful, durable and exciting! We already have so many ideas on how we can use this fabric...the possibilities are endless! What do you think? Do you like what we purchased? On a side note, I was very thankful and lucky this weekend. 2 Reasons - 1. It was my parent's 30th Wedding Anniversary! Congratulations Mom and Dad! And do you know what my mom did on her anniversary, she accompanied me to the Textile Show so that I would not go alone. On her Anniversary! Aren't moms awesome?! I am so fortunate to have amazing parents which brings me to my second reason why I was lucky this weekend - 2. My father, and business partner, took a spill on his motorcycle while on the freeway this weekend. Yes, on the freeway! His motorcycle was totaled but he was okay. Banged up and bruised, but perfectly fine considering the situation. I thank my lucky stars that somebody was watching out for him. It's so crazy how your life could change in a second. Make sure you let your loved ones know just how much you love them because you never know what's around the corner. I have lots to be thankful for and hope you do to. Happy Tuesday!

The Story Behind El Sombrero!

So there you are, on any given Taco Tuesday, margarita in hand, and you wonder how the sombrero you're wearing is unique from the cowboy hats several of the bar patrons have on. What differentiates the two styles? More specifically, why is the sombrebro more unique to Mexican culture? The story behind the sombrero may help you to understand the true design behind this cultural signpost.

They say the devil is in the details, and in this case, the benefit is in the brim. Cowboys who originated the cowboy hat may have used sombrero to describe any wide-brimmed hat, but the true design behind the sombrero was meant to incorporate an even wider brim. Which is, after all, where the sombrero gets its name. "Sombrero," derived from the Spanish "sombra" is translated literally as "shader," since the extra-wide, curved brim found on these hats is known to shade the face of its wearer. This became particularly helpful for workers in Mexico who needed to shade themselves from the hot sun when working outside. The added curve keeps the brim in place.

Made from woven straw, which is often embellished through patterns, the sombrero features a chin strap that helps the wearer keep their hat in place. This chin strap is often where wealthier sombrero wearers took liberties: gold or silver was woven into the strap braid or silver conches sewn on. Some believe that fancier sombreros originated in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Cajeta Filled Cupcakes & Roasted Poblano and Corn Risotto

Hola Amigos! How's your week been so far? The weekend is almost here!! Any exciting plans? Truth be told, I don't really get a weekend because we are open everyday except Monday. Luckily, Marko helps me here on Saturdays so we still get to hang out together and make our day as fun as possible. Thanks, Marko! :) So, as a reward for our hard work, Marko and I make sure that Sunday night we make ourselves a really nice dinner. I was searching online for some recipes for this weekend's dinner and came across these two that I just had to share, Roasted Poblano Corn Risotto and Cajeta Filled Cupcakes. OH MY DELICIOUS GOODNESS!!!! Don't they sound amazing? I absolutely love Cajeta. Cajeta, similar to Dulce de Leche, is a thickened syrup made of sweetened caramelized milk. I remember being young and sneaking into the kitchen to eat several spoonfuls of cajeta straight from the jar when my mom wasn't looking. If only she knew! Anyhow, have any of you heard of Chef Marcela Valladolid? She is a local San Diegan that has a show on the Food Network, Mexican Made Easy. Well, we have her to thank for these two recipes. ROASTED POBLANO AND CORN RISOTTO

Ingredients:

5 ½ cups (or more if needed) Chicken Stock
4 tbsp unsalted butter
1 cup finely chopped onion
3 Roasted poblano peppers, charred, peeled, seeded, and cut into ¼ inch cubes
1 ear of corn, kernels removed
1 ½ cups Arborio rice
½ cup dry white wine
½ cup Parmesan cheese (have more for serving)

Bring stock to simmer. Remove from heat. Keep warm.

Melt 4 tbsp butter over medium heat. Add onion; sauté until soft and golden, add poblanos and corn and sauté. Sprinkle with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add rice and stir 2 minutes. Add wine and let cook until absorbed, about 1 minute. Add 1 ½ cup warm stock; cook until absorbed, stirring often. Add approx. ½ cupful at a time, allowing each addition to be absorbed before adding more (and stirring often, this will result in a creamy risotto, because the starches from the rice develop while stirring.) Rice has to be tender and creamy. Remove from heat and add cheese. Serve immediately.

CAJETA FILLED CUPCAKES

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting pan

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature, plus extra for greasing pan

3/4 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs, at room temperature

1 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

1/2 cup whole milk

1/4 cup cajeta*

Mexican Vanilla Buttercream Frosting (recipe follows)

*Cajeta is a Mexican caramel sauce made from goats milk that can be found in Latin markets. If unavailable, use a rich dark caramel sauce

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Butter and flour a 12-cup muffin pan, or use paper liners. In a large bowl, combine the flour baking powder, and 3/4 teaspoon salt.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, 1 at a time then beat in the vanilla extract. With mixer on low, beat in the flour mixture in 2 parts, alternating with milk.

Divide the batter among the prepared muffin cups. Bake until a toothpick inserted in center of a cupcake comes out clean, about 20 minutes. Let cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Remove the cupcakes from the pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Using a paring knife, cut a 1-inch-deep piece from the top of each cupcake. Save the cut pieces. Fill each hole with 1 teaspoon of cajeta and replace the cut out pieces. Frost the cupcakes with Mexican Vanilla buttercream Frosting.

Mexican Vanilla Buttercream Frosting:

3 cups powdered sugar

1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature

Pinch salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 tablespoons Mexican crema or sour cream, plus extra as needed

Using an electric mixer on low speed, beat the butter and sugar until smooth. Add the salt, vanilla extract and crema. Increase the speed to high and beat until fluffy, about 3 minutes, adding extra Mexican crema, as needed, to make the frosting spreadable.

Mexican Inspired Wedding!

While looking for some bridal shower inspiration on Green Wedding Shoes, I came across this absolutely adorable Mexican inspired wedding! This lovely couple wanted to incorporate their Mexican heritage without making their wedding feel like it was a "Cinco de Mayo" celebration. The colors that they used, turquoise, pink, purple and yellow were very festive yet delicate and romantic - perfect for a wedding, birthday or shower! I'm loving the fact that they used a dresser for their dessert table. Pick one up at a garage sale or on Craigslist and paint it to coordinate with your own event's colors. Very budget friendly and definitely unique! Luckily I am a collector of cake-plates and vintage dishware so the tabletop is literally going to be a piece of cake! Don't You Just LOVE Mexican Art?!?!

Hello! I thought that I would brighten up your slightly chilly and overcast San Diego day with these colorful pictures from around the store. Hope you like them!

People always love this Day of the Dead version of Frida Kahlo because as you can see she is "blessed" in the bosom department. Her teeth, not so much.

I love this handmade fabric doll of Frida Kahlo and think that it would be so cute in a children's room. One day, if and when I have a child, I want his or her room to be eclectic and would probably have a lot of handmade pieces from around the world like this one.

Milagros hearts are perfect for any occasion. Truly one of my favorite pieces that we carry and the only thing that I have in my home from the store.

I love this sweet little nicho with a "non-typical" image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. It makes me think of "The Shack" written by William P. Young, where God presents himself in a "non-typical" form to a man in need.

Ginger Lime Margarita by Enjoy Cupcakes

I don't know if you've figured this out yet, but my kryptonite is margaritas. (Oh, and chips and salsa, too!) I'm always looking for news ways to spice up my favorite drink and found this lovely recipe a few days ago while reading one of my daily reads, Design*Sponge.

Ingredients

juice of 1 lime
juice of ½ orange
juice of ½ lemon (Meyer lemon, if available)
2 ounces tequila
1 ounce Cointreau
3” stems of ginger (more if desired)
1 tablespoon sugar

Garnish Ingredients: Ground graham cracker mixed with sugar and lime zest combined with sugar

Methodology
Serves 1
1. Squeeze all juice into a glass or small pitcher.
2. Add tequila, Cointreau and sugar.
3. Stir well.
4. Zest fresh ginger over the glass or pitcher (omit or add more to taste).
5. Strain the mixture with a fine sieve into another cup or a pitcher full of ice.
6. To garnish, rub lime wedge along the rim of your glass and dip it into the graham-cracker sugar mixture. Sprinkle sugared lime zest on a lime wedge and add to the glass rim.

Best Seafood Tacos in San Diego: TJ Oyster Bar

I get asked all the time by my customers where to go eat GOOD Mexican food, and as odd as it sounds, there really aren't too many places in San Diego that I love. Love enough, that I went 3 times in one week. You heard me, 3 amazing times. Well, I'm here to tell you that I've found a place. It's not conveniently located and there's always a line out the door, but it's totally worth it. This is my new favorite place to eat. Just thinking about their Marlin Cheese Tacos makes my mouth water. Are they new? No. Are they expensive? No. Why haven't I been there before even though I've driven past it at least a million-and-one times? Because, I judged a book by it's cover. TJ Oyster Bar is located in Bonita, 15 minutes south of Downtown San Diego, in a mini strip mall. If you blink, you'll miss it. I suggest that if you want a bit of Mexico without having to cross the border that you venture over to TJ Oyster Bar. My favorites are the Marlin Cheese Taco (AKA taqueso), Octopus Taco and 7 Seas Soup (7 Mares). Hope you enjoy and I'd love to hear what you think!

It is Thursday again and you know what that means? It's almost the weekend! So, to start the weekend a little early we are going to make a new cocktail we found on the Small Screen Network (www.smallscreennetwork.com) on "The Cocktail Spirit with Robert Hess". Robert Hess (aka "DrinkBoy") is well-known in the mixologist community and I just love his channel on the Small Screen Network.

The Rosita is a tequila-based cocktail which are far and few between. So, I am very happy to share this libation creation with you. It has a complex flavor profile which may surprise some at first, but I assure you it is worth it! Make one tonight and let us know what you think?

1 1/2 oz Silver Tequila

1/2 oz Sweet Vermouth (Refrigerate after opening)

1/2 oz Dry Vermouth (Refrigerate after opening)

1/2 oz Campari

Dash of Angostura Bitters

Stir with ice

Strain into an ice filled rocks glass

Garnish with a lemon twist

Serve with straws

Wow, has it really been 1 year already!?!? I can't believe it. It felt just like yesterday that we opened the doors here at Casa Artelexia for the very first time. I don't know if I was more nervous or excited. For the first few weeks we would get 1, 2, maybe 3 customers if we were lucky. People were a little hesitant about entering the little orange house that they thought might be a "Medicinal Pharmacy". However, very quickly word got out about us. We were in fact not a "Pharmacy" but a family-run boutique filled to the brim with handmade treasures from all over Mexico. We started hosting parties, movie nights and art workshops in our very own backyard. Our community began to grow. Our customers were becoming more familiar, and with time became our friends rather than our customers. The idea was to bring something to the community. To open a store and bring these unique pieces to you, our friends and customers. What I hadn't realized was what I would get out of it in return and for that I am truly grateful. I am grateful for the friends that I, and my entire family, have come to meet through the store. For their kindness, support and love. I thank you all so very much for being with us this past year. Your patronage is much appreciated and we hope that we can only exceed your expectations in 2011. As a thank you to our wonderful customers we are holding a drawing on March 1st. The Tequila Made Me Do It......

Are you a tequila aficionado but want to try a tequila cocktail that isn't a run-of-the-mill margarita? Well, do I have a delicious cocktail for you! I discovered it in a cocktail book called "the cocktail : 200 fabulous drinks" by Jane Rocca. The drink is called the "Mexican Manhattan" and we made it last night. It is also goes by the name "Tequila Manhattan". Now, for those of you who only think of Manhattan as a place, it is also the name of a classic cocktail which originated in the late 1800s in Manhattan. It is normally made with rye or bourbon whiskey as the base liquor, with sweet vermouth and some sort of bitters, normally Angostura bitters. As you probably have guessed by now, the Mexican Manhattan replaces the rye or bourbon with tequila. Give it a try and let us know how you like it! We loved it and found that it was not overly strong on the tequila. Cheers!!

1.5 oz Tequila (Preferably a reposado, but a gold tequila will work)

2 teaspoons Maraschino Liqueur (Maraska brand preferably, but Luxardo will do)

2 teaspoons Sweet Vermouth (Martini & Rossi or Cinzano brands. Be sure to refrigerate after opening!)

2 - 3 dashes Angostura Bitters (A must-have for any home bar.)

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail mixing glass, fill with ice and stir for about 20 seconds.

Strain into a chilled martini or old-fashioned glass.

Garnish with a cherry.

Amazing Black Bean Brownies...Are you serious?!?!

I don't know about you but I'm a little curious about these brownies. Could they really be that delicious to be called Amazing Black Bean Brownies? I mean we are talking about black beans here. Don't get me wrong, I love black beans. I love black beans on my sopes, with some rice, in a burrito, with my chicken, but in a dessert? I guess I only have one option. I am going to make them and see for myself if these brownies are in fact, amazing. Check back on Tuesday to read the verdict. Wish me luck!

Amazing Black Bean Brownie Recipe by: Ania Catalano

For those of you who have a hard time tracking down agave nectar (which is becoming much more readily available) substitute honey 1:1 for the agave nectar. Ania's head notes encourage you to keep these brownies in the refrigerator, they will slice much better if refrigerated several hours or preferably overnight. I used instant coffee this time around, but you can find natural coffee substitute at many natural food stores.

4 ounces unsweetened chocolate
1 cup unsalted butter
2 cups soft-cooked black beans, drained well (hs: canned is fine)
1 cup walnuts, chopped
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
¼ cup (granulated) natural coffee substitute (or instant coffee, for gluten-sensitive)
¼ teaspoon sea salt
4 large eggs
1½ cups light agave nectar

Preheat the oven to 325°F. Line an 11- by 18-inch (rimmed) baking pan (hs note: or jellyroll pan) with parchment paper and lightly oil with canola oil spray.

Melt the chocolate and butter in a glass bowl in the microwave for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes on high. Stir with a spoon to melt the chocolate completely. Place the beans, 1/2 cup of the walnuts, the vanilla extract, and a couple of spoonfuls of the melted chocolate mixture into the bowl of a food processor. Blend about 2 minutes, or until smooth. The batter should be thick and the beans smooth. Set aside.

In a large bowl, mix together the remaining 1/2 cup walnuts, remaining melted chocolate mixture, coffee substitute, and salt. Mix well and set aside.

In a separate bowl, with an electric mixer beat the eggs until light and creamy, about 1 minute. Add the agave nectar and beat well. Set aside.

Add the bean/chocolate mixture to the coffee/chocolate mixture. Stir until blended well.

Add the egg mixture, reserving about 1/2 cup. Mix well. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Using an electric mixer, beat the remaining 1/2 cup egg mixture until light and fluffy. Drizzle over the brownie batter. Use a wooden toothpick to pull the egg mixture through the batter, creating a marbled effect. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until the brownies are set. Let cool in the pan completely before cutting into squares. (They will be soft until refrigerated.)
Makes 45 (2-inch) brownies.

Huichol Yarn Paintings and Bead Art

Casa Artelexia

Descendents of the Aztec, the Huichol or Wixáritari are an indigenous ethnic group of western central Mexico, living in the Sierra Madre Occidental range in the Mexican states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Durango. They are best known to the larger world as the Huichol; however, they refer to themselves as Wixáritari ("the people") in their native Huichol language.

For the Huichol, yarn painting is not only an aesthetic or commercial art form. The symbols in these paintings are sprung out of Huichol culture and its shamanistic traditions. The yarn paintings were originally used as offerings at their religious sites. From the small beaded eggs and jaguar heads to the modern detailed yarn paintings in psychedelic colors, each is related to a part of Huichol tradition and belief.

The beaded art is a relatively new innovation and is constructed using glass, plastic or metal beads pressed onto a wooden form covered in beeswax. Common bead art forms include masks, bowls and figurines. Like all Huichol art, the bead work depicts the prominent patterns and symbols featured in the Huichol religion. Peyote is a focal point for their ceremonies, and their colorful beadwork and yarn work reflects a reverent and symbiotic relationship with nature.

Top 10 Lessons I Learned This Week!

This past week I was left to hold down the fort while my dad was in Mexico doing the purchasing for the store. While he was away I was left in charge to get the store ready in time for our opening - we're on a tight schedule with the holidays just around the corner. When the workers didn't show up (almost every other day due to the rain and flu), I had to jump in. This is what I learned...
1. If you see fluttering little bugs that look like ants with wings, you've just discovered termites.
2. There are 2 types of termites, subterranean (in the soil) and dry-wall. Luckily, we have both!
3. Real life termites,as opposed to cartoon termites :), take months to do any real damage. I half expected the store to disintegrate right before my eyes.
4. When you are trying to make a deadline expect delays, like 3 extra days to fumigate for termites, and several days of rain.
5. Digging up plants and grass with a 3 ft. tall gardening pick is a lot harder than it seems, and quite impossible to be ladylike while doing so.
6. Even if you wear thick leather gardening gloves, you will still get nasty blisters.
7. If you hit something hard when you are digging, it is not a treasure chest. And, if you see liquid start to come out, you have not struck oil. Unfortunately, you have found your sprinklers.
8. If you are bent over on a main street with lots of traffic you will get whistled at, even if you are in the ugliest pair of pants you own, covered in dirt, holding a gardening pick.
9. After a few days of painting and digging, expect to be very sore and in desperate need of a manicure. :)
10. Most of all, I learned that with hard work and determination, I was able to deal with whatever came my way!

Spiced Cranberry Sangría Recipe

By dressing up classic Spanish sangría with Spiced Simple Syrup and tart cranberries, Chef Jose Garces has created an ideal cocktail for a winter holiday celebration. Chef Garces serves this with an apple chip garnish for a more elegant finish, but even without it it’s delightful.
What to buy: If you can’t find a Tempranillo rosé, a less earthy Grenache rosé is a suitable substitute.

INGREDIENTS

For the fruit:

2 cups fresh cranberries
2 Granny Smith apples, large dice
1 cup Spiced Simple Syrup
3/4 cup Cointreau
1/2 cup ruby port wine

For the sangría:

1 (750-milliliter) bottle Tempranillo rosé
1/2 cup ruby port wine
1/2 cup Cointreau
1/2 cup cranberry juice

INSTRUCTIONS

For the fruit:

Combine all ingredients in a 3-quart container with a tight-fitting lid.
Cover and refrigerate at least four hours or preferably overnight.

For the sangría:

Add all ingredients to the fruit mixture and stir to combine.
Refrigerate until chilled, and serve over ice.

Makes: 2 1/2 quarts

Quick and Easy Buñuelos - Baked not Fried!

Last night I went to a friend's house for dinner where she made some really amazing Mexican food. The whole meal was absolutely delicious, but what really impressed me were her super simple, no-fuss buñuelos. What are buñuelos? They are fritter of Spanish origin, typically consist of a dough that is deep fried and finished off with a sweet topping. The particular buñuelos that we had were not deep fried but baked. They were served right out of the oven, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzled with just a smidgen of chocolate syrup...oh so good. This recipe was so easy and absolutely scrumptious that I am going to have to make them tonight for my family. They are going to love it!

Bunuelos by Sam the Cooking Guy

Ingredients

1 package (of 2) frozen puff pastry sheets
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon

Steps

Remove sheets from package and thaw at room temperature 30-40 minutes
Combine sugar and cinnamon
Heat oven to 375
Unfold sheets and cut each into 12 even pieces
Place on ungreased baking sheet and bake until puffy and golden brown 10-15 minutes
Remove from oven, and toss in sugar mix just to coat slightly - serve

If you know my father, you know that he is one determined fellow. When we decided that we were going to take our business to the next level, my dad devoted himself to finding the place. This place had to be perfect. We wanted a place with charm, sense of community, good value, a backyard and parking. He would wake up every morning at 5 am (I'm not even joking) and drive up and down every little street he could find, from Bonita to Encinitas. Finally, after days of scouring the entire San Diego area, he found it. My dad found the place that Artelexia would call home - 2419 Kettner Blvd., San Diego.

This place is going to be magical, I can already envision it. The backyard is going to be filled with flowering plants, succulents (they are my favorite), white lights galore, a fountain, talavera planters 3-4ft high, benches with brightly colored cushions, I could go on and on. The inside will be the kind of place that you can spend hours in and not even realize it. If you want to learn about Mexican culture, we'll be more than happy to share with you our knowledge and stories. And we'll be the kind of people that are always at the store and we'll give nothing less than excellent customer service. If you want something from Mexico and we don't have it, we'll find it for you. If you want something custom-made, we'll make it for you.

Pan de Muertos (Day of the Dead Bread) Recipe

Pan de Muertos

El Dia de los Muertos, The Day of the Dead, is a holiday celebrated mainly in Mexico. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration occurs on the 1st and 2nd of November, in connection with the Catholic holy days of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts. Tomorrow is the 1st of October, and with it begins the holiday festivities. If you are looking for a spooky dessert to wow your friends, look no further. This sweet egg bread recipe is the perfect treat when celebrating Day of the Dead and/or Halloween. Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup granulated sugar, plus more for sprinkling
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon anise seed
1/2 ounce (2 packets) active dry yeast
1/2 cup whole milk
1/2 cup water
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter
4 large eggs
4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 egg yolk beaten with 2 teaspoons water

INSTRUCTIONS

Combine sugar, salt, anise seed, and yeast in a small mixing bowl. Heat milk, water, and butter in a small saucepan over medium heat until butter is just melted; do not allow it to boil. Add milk mixture to dry mixture and beat well with a wire whisk.
Stir in eggs and 1 1/2 cups of the flour and beat well. Add remaining flour, little by little, stirring well with a wooden spoon until dough comes together.
Turn dough out onto a lightly floured wooden board and knead until it is smooth and elastic, and no longer sticky, about 9 to 10 minute . Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and allow it to rise in a warm area until it has doubled in size, about 1 1/2 hours.
Heat the oven to 350°F and arrange a rack in the middle. Punch down dough and divide into 2 pieces. Cut 3 small (about 1-ounce) balls from each half and mold them into skull-and-bones shapes. Shape large balls of dough into round loaf shapes, and place skull-and-bones on top. Place breads on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let rise another hour.
Brush loaves with egg yolk mixture and bake. Halfway through baking, about 20 minutes, remove loaves from oven and brush again with egg wash and sprinkle lightly with granulated sugar. Return to oven and bake until loaves are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped, about another 20 minutes.

Luchador Cocktail Recipe

This spicy beer cocktail will give you the strength to execute the high-flying moves and pile drives of the greatest luchadores (Mexican wrestlers), or at least the strength to watch them on TV.

What to buy: Clamato is a spicy tomato drink spiked with clam juice. Look for it in the juice aisle of the grocery store or in Latin markets.
Game plan: Keep a beer mug nice and frosty in your freezer for when you get the urge for an ice-cold Luchador.

INGREDIENTS

1 (12-ounce) pilsner-style Mexican beer, such as Modelo
2 ounces Clamato juice
1 ounce lime juice
3 dashes hot sauce
Pinch cumin seeds
Pinch freshly ground black pepper
Pinch kosher salt
Ice

INSTRUCTIONS

Pour beer into a frozen pint glass.
Combine remaining ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled halfway with ice. Shake vigorously, strain over beer, stir, and serve.

Sweet Destination

Check out this sweet destination, Hotel Azúcar, set in the fishing village of Costa Esemeralda.

Fodor's Review:

Azúcar, which opened in 2005, is a hotel specializing in barefoot luxury. Thatched-roof bungalows gather invitingly around a sunken pool overlooking waves crashing 20 feet away. Private open-air seating allows you to take in the ocean view from a daybed of plush pillows or a colorful hammock. Outdoor showers, straw hats, and beach volleyballs lend a sense of fun, while flat-screen TVs and pristine white rooms provide a touch of elegance. An optional package for a minimum of four people includes two nights, one dinner, airport transfers, and round-trip travel from Mexico City on a Cessna 206. Note that children under the age of 14 are not allowed.

Salsa! Salsa! Salsa!

I don't know about you, but I love to snack. One of my favorite go-to snacks is chips and salsa. It's quick, easy and I don't feel super guilty afterward. I found these three salsa recipes while checking out Saveur.com.

Salsa Verde

The recipe for this smooth, spicy salsa—the first-prize winner in the green-sauce category at the 2008 Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival—comes from Marti Cardenas of Austin, Texas.

7 jalapeño chiles, stemmed, halved, and seeded
7 serrano chiles, stemmed, halved, and seeded
7 tomatillos, husked, washed, and halved
3 cloves garlic
2 plum tomatoes, cored
1 anaheim chile, stemmed, halved, and seeded
1 poblano chile, stemmed, halved, and seeded
1⁄2 onion
1⁄4 cup finely chopped cilantro
Kosher salt, to taste

1. Put first 8 ingredients into a 4-qt. saucepan; add 8 cups water. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until chiles are soft, about 20 minutes.

2. Drain chile mixture and transfer to a food processor; purée. Let cool. Stir in cilantro and season with salt. Chill before serving.

MAKES 2 2⁄3 CUPS

This recipe was based on one by John Cunningham, who first published his recipe in a local cookbook to raise money for an Austin-based charity called Colin's Hope (www.colinshope.org).

7 cloves garlic
2 serrano chiles, stemmed, halved,
and seeded
1 habanero chile, stemmed, halved,
and seeded
2 medium beefsteak tomatoes, cored
and seeded
1⁄2 white onion
1 1⁄2 cups canned, drained, and diced
fire-roasted tomatoes
1⁄3 cup fresh lime juice
1⁄4 cup chopped cilantro leaves
3 scallions, thinly sliced
Kosher salt, to taste

1. In a food processor, chop garlic and chiles. Add beefsteak tomatoes and onion; pulse until chopped. Add fire-roasted tomatoes, lime juice, cilantro, and scallions; pulse until roughly chopped. Season with salt.

MAKES 4 1⁄2 CUPS

Mango–Habanero Salsa

This recipe was based on one by Jill Lewis, first-place winner in the Special Variety category at the 2008 Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival. Adding the mangoes after puréeing gives this salsa a chunky texture.

3 tbsp. canola oil
3 cloves garlic, unpeeled
3 tomatillos, husked and washed
3 tomatoes, cored
1 red bell pepper
1 yellow bell pepper
1 orange habanero chile
1 poblano chile
1⁄2 medium white onion
1⁄2 cup minced red onion
1⁄4 cup chopped cilantro leaves
1⁄4 cup fresh lime juice
1 large mango, peeled, pitted,
and cut into 1⁄4" cubes
Kosher salt, to taste

1. Heat oven to broil; place a rack 6" from the heating element. Put the first 9 ingredients into a large bowl and toss. Transfer ingredients to a foil-lined baking sheet; broil, turning a few times, until blistered, 10–12 minutes. Transfer all but the peppers and chiles to a bowl; let cool. Continue broiling peppers and chiles until soft, 3–5 minutes. Let steam in a covered bowl for 15 minutes.

2. Peel garlic and stem, seed, and peel peppers and chiles; transfer all broiled vegetables to a food processor; process until finely chopped. Transfer salsa to a bowl and stir in red onions, cilantro, lime juice, and mangoes; season with salt.

A few weeks back I set out on a mission. I, with the help of my wonderful husband, headed out to New Mexico to introduce Artelexia to the shop owners of Santa Fe and Albuquerque. We loaded up the car with a selection of our products and drove the scenic 14-hour drive.

We made sure to leave some time for some sightseeing- Pecos National Park.

Pecos preserves 12,000 years of history including the ancient Pueblo of Pecos, Colonial Missions, and the site of the Civil War Battle of the Glorieta Pass.

We definitely felt the love in Santa Fe. We met some amazing shop owners, we were well-received by all and we were very happy with the outcome. The trip was a success! It is a great feeling to see your hard work pay off. The trip was definitely worth the 14-hour drive each way.

If you ever have the chance to make your way out to Santa Fe, I recommend it hands down. You will not be disappointed. The people are gracious, the food is delicioso, and the sunsets are simply gorgeous...sigh.

Road Trip. Santa Fe, here we come!

Time: 13 hours. Copilot: my hubby.
Mission: 10 new Artelexia wholesale accounts.
Deadline: August 28th, 2009.

Can we do it? Can we get 10 new accounts by August 28th? You bet your green chiles we can. I have packed the car with the best of the best of our Artelexia products and am ready to go.

Held on the third weekend in August every year, Indian Market draws more than 100,000 collectors, gallery owners and fans of Indian art from around the world. Green Chile Stew, The Shed- Named one of the Top Ten Must-Visit Classic Restaurants by Bon Appetit in this September's issue. The restaurant opened in 1953, but the hacienda that houses the area's favorite lunch and dinner spot dates back to 1692. Many dishes—enchiladas, tacos, burritos—come with green or red chile sauce. Order both, a.k.a. Christmas-style. They also make a mean guacamole and an ever so tasty margarita. Delicioso! Tip: They book up pretty fast. Make reservations at least a week in advance. Luckily, I called yesterday to make ours and it was the last one available for the whole weekend!

Green Chile Cheeseburger, Bobcat Bite - Voted BEST Hamburger in America by Bon Appetit. And let me tell you, both my husband and I agree, hands down, that this is the tastiest burger that we have ever had. Ever. My mouth is watering...

Santa Fe Farmer's Market. The market that began with a handful of farmers in the late 1960s is now by far New Mexico's largest farmers' market and one of the most widely recognized markets in the United States and beyond. The Santa Fe Farmers Market represents over 100 active vendors and features hundreds of different agricultural products. To further meet Santa Fe's demand for fresh, local produce, the Market began operating year-round in 2002, and with more and more farmers using extended growing techniques, the "off season" becomes more successful every year.

If I had a few extra thousand dollars, I would pick up a pair of these snazzy boots at Back at the Ranch. I'm not big into cowboy boots myself, but after spending five minutes in this store, I dare you not to want a pair! The detail that goes into the design in absolutely amazing!

Seared Spicy Fajitas

Yum...doesn't this look absolutely delicious? Not only is this popular Mexican meal scrumptious, it's healthy too!

Seared Spicy Fajitas

Ingredients

1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
coarse salt and ground pepper
1 pound skirt steak, cut crosswise into 2 equal pieces (if too large for skillet, cut into smaller pieces)
2 red bell peppers (ribs and seeds removed), halved and thinly sliced
1 red onion, halved and thinly sliced
1 to 2 jalapeno chiles (ribs and seeds removed), very thinly sliced lengthwise
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
8 flour tortillas (6-inch)
sour cream and lime wedges, for serving

Directions

In a small bowl, combine cumin, coriander, 2 teaspoons coarse salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Rub steaks all over with spice mixture.
Heat a large skillet over medium-high; add meat (if crowded, cook in two batches). Cook 2 to 4 minutes per side for medium-rare. Transfer to a cutting board. Tent steaks with aluminum foil, and let rest at least 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, reduce heat to medium; add bell peppers, onion, and chiles; season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until crisp-tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Add lime juice, and stir, scraping up browned bits in skillet.
Stack tortillas, and wrap in a damp paper towel or kitchen towel. Microwave on high 1 minute. Thinly slice steaks crosswise, and serve with tortillas, peppers, onion, and chiles, along with sour cream and lime wedges.

Tequila Shrimp

Yummm....I am craving some shrimp on the bbq right now. I know it's a little early for shrimp, but these recipes look so good. Maybe tonight I'll make one of them for dinner. I'll invite a few people over, set up a table outside, light some candles, watch the sunset and have a beer or two with one of these delicious Tequila shrimp recipes. Now the only problem will be deciding which recipe to make.

Serves: 4

Ingredients

1 1/2 lb large shrimp in shell (21 to 25 per pound), peeled and deveined
1 teaspoon kosher salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 cup white or reposado tequila
3/4 cup crema or sour cream
1 scallion, thinly sliced

Tip: Rice makes a great accompaniment for shrimp.

Directions

Toss shrimp with kosher salt and 3/4 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper.
Heat butter in a 12-inch heavy skillet over medium-high heat until foam subsides, then sauté shrimp, turning, until pink and just cooked through, 3 to 5 minutes. Reduce heat and add tequila, then increase heat to medium-high. Tilt skillet over gas burner to ignite tequila (or ignite with a long match; use caution, as flames may shoot up high). Cook, shaking skillet gently once or twice, until flames subside. Remove from heat and stir in crema. Serve sprinkled with scallion.

Tequila-Orange Grilled Shrimp with Lime-Cilantro Rice

Ingredients

Serves 4 to 6

1 pound large shrimp, peeled, deveined, and tails left on
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 jalapeno chile, very finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, very finely chopped
Zest of 1 lime, plus lime wedges for serving
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
1 cup orange juice
1/4 cup tequila
1 shallot, finely chopped
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives
Simple Supper: Lime-Cilantro Rice

Directions

In a medium bowl, combine shrimp, oil, half the jalapeno, half the garlic, and zest; season with salt and pepper. Refrigerate, covered, for at least 15 minutes and up to 1 hour.
In a shallow saucepan, combine remaining jalapeno and garlic, 1 teaspoon salt, pepper, orange juice, tequila, and shallots; bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook until mixture is thick and syrupy, 7 to 8 minutes. Stir in butter; keep warm.
Heat a gas grill on high or stove-top grill pan over high heat. Grill shrimp, turning once, until just opaque, about 4 minutes. Transfer to a serving platter; pour tequila sauce over shrimp. Garnish with chives; serve immediately with lime wedges.

Tequila Shrimp and Asadero Quesadillas

INGREDIENTS

9 ounces grated Asadero cheese- If you can’t find it, try substituting Monterrey jack, pepper jack, cheddar, mozzarella
8 (10-inch) flour tortillas
Tequila Shrimp

INSTRUCTIONS

Scatter 1/2 cup of the cheese evenly over 1 tortilla. Using a slotted spoon, remove 1/4 of the Tequila Shrimp from their sauce, arrange on the tortilla, and drizzle with shrimp sauce to your liking. Scatter with another 1/2 cup of the cheese and top with a second tortilla. Repeat to make 4 quesadillas.
Heat a seasoned cast iron skillet or a large frying pan over medium heat. Add 1 quesadilla and cook until the cheese melts and the bottom tortilla has a few golden brown spots, about 3 to 4 minutes. Flip and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes, or until the bottom tortilla has a few golden brown spots. Repeat for remaining quesadillas. Slice into quarters and serve.
